The Lateral Incisor - An Open & Shut Case?

Tuesday, 27th February 2017

The incidence of congenitally missing one or both maxillary lateral incisors is estimated to be 2% of the population and after wisdom teeth and mandibular 2nd bicuspids, they are the 3rd most commonly missing tooth. Therefore, the question of, “Do we open or shut?” arises relatively frequently. In deciding between space reopening for eventual placement of an osteointegrated implant or space closure with substitution of the missing lateral with the canine, we take into consideration many factors such as the degree of crowding, whether there is a Class II dental protrusion or a Class III negative overjet, and other more subtle elements which might sway the decision one way or the other. Both approaches have their challenges as we strive to achieve the best possible aesthetic and functional outcome. In this lecture we will list the determinants and the challenges, review the literature, and illustrate the points interactively with the audience using many case reports.
