Professor Tord Berglundh: afternoon/evening course 17th October 2017

Current challenges in implant dentistry.

Peri-implantitis – diagnosis, prevalence, risk factors and treatment

Professor Tord Berglundh (University of Gothenburg, Sweden)

Dr. Berglundh is Professor at the Department of Periodontology and Head of the Periodontal Research Laboratory at University of Gothenburg. He is Associate Editor of Clinical Oral Implants Research and Journal of Clinical Periodontology and the textbook Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. Dr. Berglundh has produced more than 170 scientific publications within the field of dental implants, periodontology, immunology, genetics, tissue integration and regeneration. Interactions between periodontitis and peri-implantitis represent one of the major fields of research and include translational systems of combinations of molecular biology techniques, experimental models and clinical trials.

 Outline of the course:

 Understanding outcomes in implant therapy

 •       Are we using the correct methods for evaluating dental implant therapy?

 •       What are the currently expected outcomes? Is implant loss a common outcome?

 •       Is marginal bone loss a normal event or a sign of pathology?

Peri-implantitis and periodontitis – two different entities?

 •       Is peri-implant mucositis the obvious precursor of peri-implantitis, as is gingivitis for periodontitis?

 •       Differences between peri-implantitis and periodontitis lesions.

 •       Are there differences in disease progression between peri-implantitis and periodontitis?

Prevalence and risk factors for peri-implantitis

 •       What is the current prevalence of peri-implantitis and has it increased over time?

 •       Which patients are at risk?

 •       How can modified implant surfaces be risk factors for peri-implantitis?

 Treatment of peri-implantitis

 •       How predictable are current treatment methods?

 •       Infection control. Decontamination of implant surfaces.

 •       Resective or reconstructive surgical procedures?

 •       Supportive therapy - how can we prevent peri-implantitis?
